World Food Day is declared on 16 October to raise awareness of the challenges of addressing world hunger and encourage people to get involved in the fight against it. The theme for 2015 is "Social protection and agriculture: Breaking the cycle of rural poverty".

This time in Sri Lanka, the World Food Day was gloriously celebrated at the Institute of Post Harvest Technology, Anuradhapura with the collaboration of UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Sri Lanka on 16th October, 2015. As the chief guest, Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Duminda Dissanayake was invited and he addressed the farmers who have gathered on this occasion and the audience. Also he gave his special appreciation to the presenters of drama troupes who have come from different districts in Sri Lanka in order to give their massages related to the Food Security through dramas.

Mrs. Beth Crawford, FAO Representative in Sri Lanka and Maldives & the staff members of FAO & WFP also been participated to the meeting.

As a special event of the day, Department of Agriculture with the collaboration of FAO distributed 1500 number of plants to the farmers.
