In order to prevent the serious losses occurring in fruits & vegetables during post operations from farmer to consumer, amounting to 30-35% of the annual production a project funded by the Treasury under the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services has been implemented since 2006 to introduce plastic crates to farmers, collectors and wholesale traders at subsidized rate for transportation of fruits and vegetables.

In this regard, 170,000 plastic crates have been provided to  farmers and collectors of fruits and vegetables in the districts of Nuwara Eliya Badulla, Gampaha, Colombo, Kaluthara, Galle, Hambanthota, Ratnapura, Vavuniya, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Monaragala, Kandy, Matale, Puttalam, Anuradhapura and Pollonnaruwa and traders operating their business in Dedicated Economic Centres in Dambulla, Tambuttegama, Keppetipola, Nuwara Eliya, Narahenpita and Ratmalana.

In addition, 15000 farmers and collectors were trained to create awareness among them on the benefits of using improved packages for handling and transportation of fruits and vegetables.
